Information and awareness on climate change in the main cities of Spain (I)

MITECO

This initiative was born in order to achieve an adequate level of awareness among the public population, and especially young people in the main cities of the Spanish geography about the problem of climate change.

This initiative was born in order to achieve an adequate level of awareness among the public population, and especially young people in the main cities of the Spanish geography about the problem of climate change.

Along these lines, work has been carried out on four fundamental axes in the urban environment, such as energy, transport, urban planning and consumption, in order to encourage the public to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Thus, workshops have been held in which the public has been provided with general information on climate change, explaining in understandable terms the influence of individual habits on emissions in the energy, transport, urban planning and consumption sectors.

The initiative has had as its fundamental axis to transmit the great transformative potential of the participatory action of citizens in the design and management of alternatives that reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The general methodology used has consisted of carrying out activities in such a way that they were suitable for all audiences, encouraging the participation of families. The materials and workshops have been pedagogically adapted to be used in schools.

Twelve cities in the national territory have been visited, informing citizens about the repercussions that the fields of energy, urban planning, transport and consumption have on the generation of greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change.

The activities have taken place in tents in which a booklet with general information on climate change has been given to the public. In addition, a guided exhibition with panels on climate change and the responsibilities of greenhouse gas emissions has been exhibited, and participatory activities have been developed.

Within the framework of the project, a general information booklet on climate change and participatory solutions has been published, aimed at an audience aged 10 and over, an illustrated book for the public between 10 and 14 years old, and an activity booklet, aimed at reinforcing the content worked on in the workshops.
