Development of the Sustainability Observatory in Spain

MITECO

In 2004, the Biodiversity Foundation, the Ministry of the Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs and the General Foundation of the University of Alcalá created the Sustainability Observatory (OSE) in Spain with the aim of becoming a state-wide reference centre that rigorously collects, prepares and evaluates basic information on sustainability in Spain.

Information on sustainability (situation, trends and scenarios) also takes into account the different social, economic and environmental dimensions. Thus, the SBI has carried out a multitude of actions, with the annual reports on sustainability and the thematic reports published in relation to water, air quality in cities, changes in land use and local sustainability being particularly relevant.

These reports are regularly made available to society and public authorities, which now have solid and permanently updated information, which contributes to decision-making towards sustainable development.
