Vulturnet. Connectivity of scavenger populations across their European range

MITECO

Facilitating demographic communication between the subpopulations of necrophagous birds in Spain and the relict nuclei of the rest of Western Europe through an East-West ecological corridor is the main objective of this initiative.

Facilitating demographic communication between the subpopulations of necrophagous birds in Spain and the relict nuclei of the rest of Western Europe through an East-West ecological corridor is the main objective of this initiative.

It is also intended to publicize the project and its benefits for local populations, so that it contributes to the rural development of the regions framed and to an effective fight against the use of poisons in the natural environment.

More specifically, it is intended to:

  1. To promote the presence of the griffon vulture in Italy and Portugal, through the translocation and release of individuals from Spanish recovery centers.
  2. Continue with the projects initiated for the reintroduction of the griffon vulture in southern Italy.
  3. To promote the natural expansion of the Spanish black vulture population to the northeast and west, through reinforcement/reintroduction projects at strategic points (International Tagus National Park, Portugal and others).
  4. Continue with the project initiated to reintroduce the black vulture in Catalonia.
  5. Create feeding points for necrophagous birds that facilitate the sedimentation of specimens in key areas and minimise the risk of poisoning.
  6. Have local staff to achieve greater social involvement in the project.
