This species represents an important natural resource that is decisive for the occupational training of the local population and the realization of ecotourism activities. The loggerhead turtle, in danger of extinction, has as its only relevant nesting site, on the entire East Atlantic coast, the island of Boavista (Cape Verde). On this island of scarce natural resources, the traditional hunting of female nesting on the beaches is very important and seriously threatens the survival of the turtles.

The nesting protection efforts of the NGO Cape Verde Natura 2000 are beginning to yield results. But in order to improve and consolidate protection, it is essential to carry out continuous actions of awareness and active participation of local communities in conservation, in the conviction that sea turtles can be a very important attraction and a decisive natural resource for the development of incipient tourism.

The project aims to implement joint actions with the local population to raise awareness, social participation for the protection of this species and occupational training to develop conservation and ecotourism activities. In addition, youth employment and child education and feeding will be supported.

The aim is to act globally in all the towns of Boavista, contacting a minimum of 3,000 adults and 1,000 children. It is estimated that a minimum of 30 young people from Boavista will actively participate in the education and training actions.
