Recovery of river environments for the recovery of biodiversity in the Congost River

MITECO

The objective of this project is to achieve the environmental rehabilitation of a section of the Congost riverbed, by improving river connectivity, revegetation of the channel and the creation of habitats for fauna.

The objective of this project is to achieve the environmental rehabilitation of a section of the Congost riverbed, by improving river connectivity, revegetation of the channel and the creation of habitats for fauna.

More specifically, the following objectives were sought:

1. Recovery of aquatic fauna from the establishment of fish passages.
2. Consolidation of unstable banks and creation of refuges for fauna.
3. Recovery of riparian vegetation.
4. Recreation of wetlands in the riverbed.
5. Environmental integration of the environment adjacent to the riverbed.

The execution of the actions has been satisfactory, allowing the fulfillment of the objectives set out in this project. Thus, it has been possible to improve longitudinal connectivity in the river by removing obstacles and establishing passages for fauna. Various actions have also been carried out to promote the creation of refuges for flora and fauna from the consolidation of river banks.

The elimination of invasive species and the recovery of riverside vegetation with native species have been promoted. Cane (Arundo donax) and cortaderia (Cortaderia selloana) have been eliminated, and manual sowing and revegetation of riverside species have been carried out, in areas where non-native vegetation has been removed.

In addition, different wetlands have been recreated in the riverbed, an old branch of the river has been recovered and a secondary channel has been reopened, which has allowed the appearance of temporary wetlands. Finally, the environment adjacent to the riverbed has been consolidated, revegetated and conditioned to promote its environmental integration.

In this sense, the actions carried out have allowed the environmental restoration of the Congost River as it passes through Granollers, as a means for the recovery of biodiversity in this river ecosystem.
