This initiative aims to improve the conservation of Orinoco crocodile (Crocodylus intermedius) populations through research and sustainable development plans. The objective is to improve the conservation status of the Orinoco crocodile through a program of research, captive breeding and reintroduction in the Eastern Plains of Colombia.
It is also intended to raise awareness among the local population about the importance of protecting the natural ecosystems of the Orinoco Plains and to propose measures that allow them to make sustainable use of the natural environment in general, and the Orinoco crocodile in particular.
More specifically, the actions to be carried out will allow:
- To have a better knowledge about the state of conservation of the Colombian plains ecosystems, as well as the populations of Orinoco crocodiles that inhabit them.
- To obtain an exhaustive diagnosis and proposals for solutions regarding the socioeconomic situation of the communities of the Llano, especially those in the areas of distribution of the Orinoco crocodile.
- Develop a research program to improve the reproduction and growth in captivity of the species, which will culminate in the release of the first 50 specimens in natural areas of the Orinoco Plains.
- To raise awareness among local populations in particular and the Colombian population in general, about the need to protect the natural ecosystems of the Orinoco Plains.
