The Garraf Park is home to the northernmost Bonelli’s eagle locations on the Iberian Mediterranean coast, with a population of four breeding pairs, the highest density in the province. This species has suffered a significant decline in the last twenty years, due to both the loss of favorable habitats and high mortality.

The Barcelona Provincial Council has been monitoring the population since the 1970s – with radio monitoring and the placement of cameras in the nests – and the dynamics and conservation problems of this species are known in detail. The management carried out has reduced both the mortality rate with the correction of power lines and the disturbance in the nests with the regulation of climbing and other activities.

In the project Habitat management in Bonelli’s eagle hunting areas in the Garraf Park (Barcelona): recovery of crops, water points, open spaces and silvicultural improvement, it is proposed to improve the habitat of prey species – basically rabbit and partridge – which has been greatly deteriorated by the abandonment of agricultural activities and the loss of open habitats.

The proposed actions – recovery of crops, pastures, water points, silvicultural work to improve forests and shrublands – will have a positive effect on the Bonelli’s eagle and on all the flora, fauna and habitats of interest in Garraf.
