European Maritime Day is celebrated every year and aims to give visibility to the sea and spread its importance among European citizens. The city of Gijón, Asturias, has been chosen by the European Commission to host the European Maritime Day 2010.
This event is part of the events that will be held within the Spanish Presidency of the EU.
Within the framework of this celebration, the progress of the LIFE+ INDEMARES project “Inventory and designation of the Natura 2000 Network in marine areas of the Spanish State” will be presented, whose main objective is to contribute to the protection and sustainable use of biodiversity in Spanish seas by identifying areas of value for the Natura 2000 Network.
There will also be a photographic exhibition, organised by Oceana with the collaboration of the Biodiversity Foundation, which consists of a series of representative images that reflect the richness and marine biodiversity of the seabed.
