Interactions between functionality and diversity in degraded semi-arid ecosystems and their relationship with reforestation activities (FUNDIVFOR)

MITECO

The main objective of the project is to implement an adaptive management programme to combat desertification based on the ecological relationships between functionality and diversity of the ecosystem in degraded semi-arid environments in the south-east of the peninsula.

The main objective of the project is to implement an adaptive management programme to combat desertification based on the ecological relationships between functionality and diversity of the ecosystem in degraded semi-arid environments in the south-east of the peninsula.

It will also analyze how the functionality and diversity of the ecosystem interacts with reforestation activities for their restoration.

More specifically, it is presented to define the strategies for the restoration and management of the restored areas, so as to optimize their functionality and increase the overall diversity of the ecosystem.

The specific actions planned are the following:

  • Study of the relationship between the success of a reforestation carried out in a pilot project and the functionality-diversity of the environmental units of action.
  • Comparison between a degraded and a reforested watershed.
  • Study of the relationship between the stress that natural plant species can suffer and the degree of functionality-diversity of ecosystems.
  • Preparation and establishment of cultivation protocols for certain plant species.
  • Evaluation of the resistance to water stress and growth pattern of the species studied.
