The project pursues the overall objective of improving living conditions in the municipalities surrounding the Laguna de Apoyo Natural Reserve (RNLA), through the optimization of environmental management through the development of common strategies and policies for comprehensive sustainable development.
The Nicaraguan Volcanic Chain, in which the RNLA is located, contains a crater lagoon, on whose slopes a semi-humid tropical forest develops. This ecosystem, of high value, contains a high biological diversity that includes several endangered species.
The approval phase in which the space is located makes the active participation of the local population especially important from these first moments. This will make it possible to stop environmental degradation, caused mainly by the lack of common regulations on the territory, and the absence of control over the activities carried out in the lagoon.
To this end, within the framework of the project, actions have been proposed that cover three major fundamental phases:
- The preparation of a socio-economic study on the dependence of the inhabitants on the natural resources of the area.
- Carrying out a study on the carrying capacity of the area to determine the number and type of activities that can be carried out in a sustainable way.
- The preparation of a proposal for sustainable local development projects for the diversification of economic activities.
