The Araucaria XXI Programme encompasses several initiatives: the Galapagos Project (Ecuador), the Atlantic Forest Regional Project (Argentina) and the Comprehensive Regional Importance Rio Frio Project (Costa Rica and Nicaragua).

This project is part of a broader and more ambitious project developed by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID): the Araucaria XXI Atlantic Forest Regional Project, which includes actions in several Latin American countries. This extensive project aims to improve the quality of life of local populations, through the conservation of the natural and cultural heritage of the region, as well as its environmental goods and services.

Regarding the Galapagos Project, the FB continues with the support provided to the AECID for the implementation of the new Management Plan, in order to strengthen both the management and planning of the Park and the direct participation of Galapagos society in these tasks.

For their part, the actions in Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay aim to improve the quality of life of local populations, through the conservation of the natural and cultural heritage of the region, as well as its environmental goods and services. It also promotes integration processes in environmental management between Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay.

Finally, within the framework of cross-border cooperation work between Nicaragua and Costa Rica, three related comprehensive projects are being launched in the area. One of them is the Integral Project of regional importance Río Frío: it has a binational character and aims to support regional integration processes. The main objective is to improve the quality of life and reduce the socioeconomic vulnerability of the inhabitants of the Rio Frio Basin, through a territorial planning of the basin that allows a sustainable flow of environmental goods and services.
