The Sierra de la Culebra – The Wolf’s Refuge

MITECO

The more than 65,000 hectares of the Sierra de la Culebra are home to the highest density of Iberian wolf (Canis lupus signatus) in the Iberian Peninsula and in the entire territory of the European Union. Hence, the City Council of Puebla de Sanabria is working on the implementation of a project aimed at the construction of a “Wolf Refuge”, that is, a thematic space for dissemination.

The missions of this project include actions to recover the species, the decisive boost to the sustainable development of the area based on nature tourism and the dissemination of information on the figure of the wolf, raising public awareness of its importance for biodiversity in Spain.

The project also has a transnational component, with Robledo bordering the Montesinho Natural Park, where the largest population of Iberian wolves in Portugal is preserved.
