This project aims to determine the valuation of the marine ecosystems of the island of El Hierro.
This project of the Oceana Foundation aims to determine the valuation of the marine ecosystems of the island of El Hierro based on documentation of its marine biodiversity. To this end , specific biological information has been collected that may contribute to a possible protection of the area in the future. The study area covers certain areas of the island of El Hierro, in the east, south and west of the island.
The development of this research has the support of the Cabildo de El Hierro, different associations of divers, the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO) and scientists from the University of La Laguna.
The main activities that will be carried out to achieve these results are:
- Maintenance of the boat on land.
- Preparations of the boat to set sail and launch.
- Coordination of contracting additional services for documentation.
- Analysis of underwater documentation
- Implementation of a communication and dissemination campaign, in coordination with the Autonomous National Parks Agency (OAPN).
Thus, it has been possible to highlight the valuesustainable management of the exploited area and enhancing the need to protect and preserve documented species and habitats. Among the results is the achievement of an agreement for the possible creation of a marine protected area in the area, which will allow sustainable management of resources. Around 250 species have also been identified, the list of species and habitats that must be protected according to current legislation has been updated and media coverage has been achieved.
