C.S.I RÍOS, Social Conservation and Research of rivers, riverbanks and wetlands

MITECO

Environmental conservation does not only consist of managing, restricting and/or prohibiting certain human actions, but also necessarily involves the awareness and direct involvement of citizens, both in decision-making and in active participation in environmental improvement actions.

Conserving the landscape, restoring enclaves and improving the ecological connectivity of habitats linked to fresh water, through the promotion and promotion of environmental volunteering and citizen participation, are the objectives of this project. C.S.I RÍOS, as the best tool for the protection and enhancement of our rivers, banks and wetlands.

Throughout history, rivers have been used as a source of energy and life, a means of transport, a landfill, etc., which has meant, to a greater or lesser extent, the degradation of their waters and their banks, as well as the flora and fauna that inhabit them. For this reason, freshwater ecosystems are one of the most degraded natural environments in our country, and their conservation and improvement are a priority.

The project develops a complete programme of environmental volunteering actions and activities, aimed at raising awareness among the local population, and improving the state of conservation of the natural and cultural heritage linked to the rivers, banks and wetlands of the Ebro and Duero basins, with the participation of residents of all ages and profiles. companies and administrations, both in rural and natural environments, as well as in urban areas, from 50 towns in the provinces of Álava, Burgos, La Rioja, Segovia, Soria and Valladolid.

On the one hand, field work is carried out, to improve, restore and conserve degraded riparian areas, favouring their recovery and the connectivity of spaces and species. And on the other hand, awareness and information on the importance of rivers, riverbanks and wetlands are worked on with the local population. That is why an environmental education and volunteering program is presented in which the study of these river ecosystems and the determination of their state of conservation is carried out, together with the corresponding restoration, ecological improvement and landscape conservation work.

It is proposed to carry out 200 educational and volunteer actions in 50 localities with the estimated participation of 1,500 volunteers, who will carry out direct river conservation actions.
