CORKLANDTOUR aims to highlight the cork landscape, one of the most genuine in the Western Mediterranean, and its social, cultural and ethnological heritage associated with the use of cork oak forests through the creation of thematic tourism products.
During 2011 and 2012, within the framework of a pilot project of the National Rural Network, work has been carried out together with protected natural areas with the presence of cork oak forests and museums and interpretation centres on cork themes. The presence of Spanish cork territories in the offers promoted by operators specialising in active and nature tourism in the main countries of origin of tourism has been analysed. From this analysis, it has been possible to verify the opportunities that the tourist valorization of these landscapes has as a way to support their conservation and promote the endogenous development of these territories. Also to raise awareness among the population (resident and visitor) about the importance of maintaining the management of cork oak forests and the consumption of cork products.
To enhance the value of the cork landscape, the following actions have been designed:
- Analysis of the starting situation: identification of potential tourist resources and facilities with a cork theme and analysis of the presence of European tour operators specialized in the cork territories as an update to the work carried out by RETECORK in 2011.
- Awareness and training sessions for tourism agents in the cork territories.
- Actions to support the creation of tourism products in the different cork territories.- Development of a campaign to promote the cork themed tourist offer: edition of the product catalogue, edition of promotional material of the cork territories, web space and social networks, contact with operators, media and opinion leaders.
