Reintroduction of the black vulture in the Pyrenees

MITECO

The black vulture (Aegypius monachus) became extinct in the Pyrenees in the nineteenth century, mainly due to deforestation and poisoning. Today, the causes that led to their disappearance or prevented recolonization are largely absent.

The project to reintroduce the black vulture aims to recover this species in an area where it is historically present. The process of natural recolonisation is accelerated thanks to the strategic geographical location of Boumort, in the Pyrenees. This area straddles the populations of southwestern Iberia and those of central and southern France. Its ecological, physical and anthropological characteristics have been endorsed by the feasibility studies carried out prior to the implementation of the project.

The reintroduction of the Black Vulture in the Pre-Pyrenees plays a crucial role as a demographic bridge between the traditional Iberian colonies and those that are being generated in the southeast of France with counterpart reintroduction projects.
