Control of diffuse emissions of particulate matter: proposal for corrective measures

MITECO

The objective is to determine the efficiency of corrective measures to control the impact of diffuse emissions of particulate matter.

The impact of diffuse emissions of particulate matter (PM) is highly significant, especially in those industrial activities that involve the handling, storage and transport of powdery materials. On some occasions it contributes up to 60% of total PM emissions, and even in activities such as works, quarries and ports these emissions are entirely diffuse.

Despite the impact that these emissions can have on air quality, there are currently no appropriate tools to obtain emission factors for their quantification, nor to determine the performance of the best available technologies implemented.

The main objective of the project “Control of diffuse emissions of particulate matter: proposal of corrective measures” is to obtain emission rates through Reverse Dispersion Modelling (RDM) and efficiencies of corrective measures.

Thus, the main activities that will be carried out are:

  1. Identification of industrial sectors and/or activities with a significant impact in terms of diffuse emissions of particulate matter.
  2. Visit and selection of facilities that meet the criteria for applying the sampling methodology.
  3. Carrying out experimental campaigns.
  4. Determination of emission factors (treatment, experimental data and simulation).
  5. Determination of efficiencies of corrective measures.
  6. Preparation of a technical guide.
