Restoration of the wetlands of the Natura 2000 Network: L’Albufera and La Mancha Húmeda

MITECO

The project “Management, conservation and restoration of wetlands” of the Global Nature Foundation (FGN) aims to contribute to the improvement of some wetlands of the Natura 2000 network and their priority species through actions in the Nature Reserves of the surroundings of the Natural Park of L’Albufera (Valencia) and the recovery of habitats in “La Mancha Húmeda”.

Throughout this year, various actions have been carried out to achieve its objectives, including the planting of helophytic vegetation that will contribute to the reduction of nutrients in the water and its monitoring, or mowing to remove excess biomass and thus help remove nutrients from the water cycle. In addition, online activities have also been carried out, such as holding an online seminar to disseminate information among experts, updating the website www.lifealbufera.org and maintaining the activity on social media.

Likewise, in the awareness-raising section, a mobile application has been created designed so that the user who visits the wetlands can recognize the species of flora and fauna that they can see at different times of the year. Public use in the SCI “Wetlands of La Mancha” has also been improved with its environmental monitoring and management through a GIS. Likewise, environmental education days have been held in schools and talks for the local population; and specific training to raise awareness among farmers in the area about biodiversity and ecosystems.
