This project aims to conserve the ecosystems and endemic and native biodiversity of the protected areas of the Natura 2000 Network.

The project “Invasive alien species in the Mediterranean Marine Natura Network: prevention, detection and management”, launched by the Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), aims to conserve ecosystems and endemic and native biodiversity in the protected areas of the Natura 2000 Network. To this end, the initiative is based on the prevention and early detection of new invasive species in the Mediterranean, to reduce the risk of expansion.

Among the specific objectives of the initiative is to develop and implement an effective system for the early detection of invasive alien species (IAS) in the geographical area of the Natura Network. It also seeks to raise awareness to prevent the introduction and spread of invasive species through awareness campaigns and activities.

The project aims to create updated maps with information on the status and distribution of invasive marine species in the Natura Network and to raise awareness among diving clubs and NGOs to participate in the monitoring of invasive marine species. In addition, the initiative will inform and train managers about these threats.

Some of the activities that are part of this project are:

• Communication campaign aimed at promoting citizen participation in the prevention and monitoring of invasive species around protected areas of the Natura 2000 Network
• Development of additional documents and identification sheets on invasive alien species for mobile devices and online platform
• Establishment and maintenance of an online alert system for the early detection and expansion of invasive alien species (IAS) for managers and organisations of protected areas of the Natura 2000 Network
