Application of adaptive forest management techniques in forest ecosystems

MITECO

FSC Spain has launched a project to analyse the situation of forests in the face of climate change.

The effects of climate change on forest ecosystems are evident. Based on different climate scenarios, a series of impacts on our forest masses can be estimated. For this reason, the Association to promote the rational use of forest products and services (FSC Spain) has launched the project “Forest certification as an instrument of adaptive forest management”, with the support of the Biodiversity Foundation

In this project, a methodology has been developed for the measurement of indicators of adaptation to climate change. An analysis of the situation of the forest ecosystem in the face of climate change has also been carried out and adaptive forest management techniques have been put into practice to deal with this situation. In addition, the impacts, vulnerability and adaptive capacity of different forest ecosystems have been analysed.

The project has created a network of FSC-certified pilot forests (Sierra de Guadarrama and Montes de Valsain National Park, Monte Navahondona in the Sierra de Segura and Las Villas Natural Park, C.M.V.M.C. de Barrantes in Tomiño – Pontevedra) in which the impacts and vulnerability to the effects of climate change have been evaluated and management recommendations have been proposed to mitigate the effects of climate change.

A project website has been created detailing all the project activities, as well as the results of the project (methodology, results in pilot locations, scientific-technical workshop conclusions and management recommendations)
