BioStandards: Certifications and labelling for biodiversity in the agri-food sector

MITECO

The project focuses on the food sector because it has a great impact on biodiversity in Europe.

The project “BioStandards: Certifications and labelling for biodiversity in the agri-food sector” developed by the Global Nature Foundation with the help of the Biodiversity Foundation has been carried out to improve the relationship with biodiversity of food processing companies and retailers throughout their supply chain.

The project has focused on the food sector because it has a great impact on biodiversity in Europe, and beyond European borders, and because of its enormous potential to contribute to halting the loss of biodiversity. Food processing companies and retailers could improve their relationship with biodiversity throughout their supply chains. In addition to the rules of the supply chain, companies are using standards and labels in order to ensure a certain quality of products.

Within the framework of this initiative, approximately 1,000 participants from the agri-food sector have received technical information on how standards, company norms or seals can help improve the protection of biodiversity: the Global Nature Foundation has signed 5 stewardship agreements with cooperatives and agri-food companies. On a pilot basis, it is applying a tool that measures biodiversity performance at the farm scale, and through Biodiversity Action Plans improvement measures are designed and implemented in almost 1,000 hectares of woody and fruit and vegetable crops in Spain .
