Improvement of the management of forests in the Spanish Mediterranean region included in the Natura 2000 Network

MITECO

The project seeks to improve the management of forests in the Spanish Mediterranean region included in the Natura 2000 Network.

The Fernando González Bernáldez Foundation has developed this project to improve the management of the forests of the Spanish Mediterranean region included in the Natura 2000 Network.

Of the 19 forest habitat types in the Spanish Mediterranean region, 17 of them have an unfavourable conservation status, whose main problems are abandonment and lack of management, and climate change. This scenario requires a new management model for which there are still no tools or reference models. The project, aimed at managers of protected areas and forest administration, aims to improve management capacities in the Natura 2000 Network to ensure the incorporation of habitat conservation and adaptation measures to climate change in the planning and management.

Thanks to the actions developed in this project, protocols, indicators and quality working documents have been developed, as well as a directory of reference forests, which will make it easier for the different agents involved in forest management to make it increasingly sustainable and based on the best available examples. About twenty technicians have been trained and the results have been distributed to a wide interest group.
