Fundación Tormes seeks to increase the biodiversity and ecological connectivity of wetlands and riverbanks in the west of the peninsula.
The Tormes Foundation is carrying out the initiative “Quarry Connect: Benefits of biodiversity management in restored and active gravel pits for the connectivity of wetlands and riverbanks in the west of the peninsula” with the support of the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and the Environment.
The project will be developed mainly in areas of Andalusia and Castilla y León and aims to increase the biodiversity and ecological connectivity of wetlands and riverbanks in the west of the peninsula. Another of its main objectives is to improve the habitat of mammal and aquatic bird populations associated with wetlands , from restored gravel pits to naturalized lagoon systems.
Likewise, its intention is to reduce the impacts on the birds that nest in the fronts of the gravel pits and backwards, as well as on amphibians that colonize them. To this end, a census of aquatic mammals will be generated with habitat adaptation actions and another census of troglodyte birds with a nesting slope design.
Finally, they will also address awareness of the state of the wetlands of the west of the peninsula with the short film “15 minutes of hope”, the educational volunteer program “Biodiversity in the restored gravel pits” and other activities that serve to disseminate the values of biodiversity and ecological connectivity.
