ESTEMAR II: a project for the study and registration of cetaceans in the Balearic Islands

MITECO

The different types of cetaceans that live in the waters of the Balearic Islands are the main objective of the ESTEMAR II project, an initiative of the Tursiops Association that has the support of the Biodiversity Foundation through its 2015 call for grants.

The different types of cetaceans that live in the waters of the Balearic Islands are the main objective of the ESTEMAR II project, an initiative of the Tursiops Association that has the support of the Biodiversity Foundation through its 2015 call for grants.

The registration of cetacean populations through acoustic and visual systems and their subsequent observation to determine how they vary throughout the year aims to apply this knowledge in the design and management of marine protected areas.

Therefore, among some of the actions that frame the project is the preparation of a proposal for the creation of a marine area resulting from the analysis of the population estimates of the different species of cetaceans.

Once the population census has been carried out, the project aims to draw up a list of species identified by area, as well as estimates of abundance of the main species and estimates of abundance by stratum.
