The use of sheep carrion to halt the decline of the Egyptian vulture in Navarre

Installation of dunghill

The main objective of the project is to halt the population decline of the Egyptian vulture in the surroundings of the Bardenas Reales Natural Park and Biosphere Reserve in Navarre. For this reason, the Association of Hunters and Fishermen of Bardenas and Irrigation Community of the Fair intends to create supply posts with carrion from extensive sheep farming.
These points will be maintained throughout the year, since the Egyptian vulture is not the only species that can access this fixed food. Some of the birds that can also benefit from the stalls are; the red kite, the black kite, the marsh harrier and other species that use the park in their migrations such as the bearded vulture or the black vulture.

Among some of the activities framed within the project is firstly the carrying out of a survey of livestock farmers in the area to find out the number of dead cattle throughout the year and their temporal distribution. Next, and related to the previous one, it will be distributed Informative material for farmers explaining the risks of using rodenticides on farms and encouraging the use of owl , owl and common kestrel nest boxes as an alternative. Other actions included in the initiative are the creation of a supplementary feeding point and awareness of the early detection of risks for the Egyptian vulture through training talks aimed at agents of the environmental authority. Finally, the entity proposes the publication of a series of educational and informative material on the Egyptian vulture that allows the species to be established as an emblem of the Natural Park.
