Sebadales are essential for marine ecosystems and the environment. Today they are in danger of disappearing from the waters of the Canary Islands due to both water pollution and uncontrolled constructions and discharges. This problem is increased by the lack of knowledge of these ecosystems by a large part of the population. The island of Tenerife is a clear example of this situation.
The use of participatory technology and citizen science, combined with the scientific work of the Innoceana organization, will yield innovative and digital information, called “Innomapas”. This information will visually describe the state of health of the sebadales of the SACs “Sebadales de Antequera and Sebadales de San Andrés”, also generating connections and synergies with local organizations, the University of La Laguna and authorities.
Creation of a photogrammetric and interactive mapping of some of the patches of sebadales of the SAC “Sebadales del Sur de Tenerife” by creating a mobile application or digital platform, carrying out the monitoring in a participatory way. The ultimate objective is to raise awareness of the importance of these ecosystems and create awareness in the population from knowledge, as well as to unite all interested parties, carrying out multiple awareness-raising activities showing the results.
The INNOMAPAS project has brought the island of Tenerife closer to its seabeds, rediscovering its riches and threats, taking a further step in the direction of conserving and restoring these valuable ecosystems that, as true underwater forests, fight against climate change.
In general, the actions carried out have served to maintain and meet the objective of carrying out a photogrammetric and interactive mapping of some of the patches of sebadales of the SAC “Sebadales del Sur de Tenerife” by creating a digital platform, carrying out the monitoring in a participatory way.
