Actions related to coastal conservation

MITECO

It includes the volunteering program ‘Beaches, rivers, volunteering and custody’ that channels cleaning and waste removal actions on beaches and rivers, among others. It also includes another block of actions aimed at encouraging more environmental beach bars.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment (MAGRAMA), through the Biodiversity Foundation, launches a new edition of the volunteering program “Beaches, rivers, volunteering and stewardship of the territory”, aimed at the improvement and conservation of the coastline and watersheds. The initiative was born in 2012 to promote the involvement of citizens in the conservation of the coastline and the areas that make up the inter-community watersheds, as well as to develop a stable network of volunteers for the maintenance and improvement of these spaces through different volunteer programs. The volunteering activities have focused on waste collection, reforestation and conservation of ecosystems, elimination of invasive species, monitoring of species and training and awareness days.

In 2015 all this work will continue, focusing efforts on enhancing the role played by citizen action in the conservation of existing ecosystems in these areas. With this objective, in this fourth edition the participation of various initiatives promoted by private and business entities will be promoted. Thus, the Biodiversity Foundation will be able to count on the economic support and collaboration of private companies so that the custodian entities develop various activities.

The Beaches, Rivers, Volunteering and Land Stewardship programme of the Biodiversity Foundation has as its protagonist Land Stewardship, an innovative tool that involves users of the territory, as well as public and private owners in the conservation and good use of natural, cultural and landscape values and resources. To achieve this, it promotes agreements and mechanisms for continuous collaboration between owners, custodial entities (non-profit organizations) and other public and private agents. This instrument is promoted by the Biodiversity Foundation, through the Land Stewardship Platform.

In addition, within the framework of the program, in 2015 the IV Edition of the Responsible Beach Bars Awards will be held. These awards were created to support compliance with the decalogue of good environmental practices aimed at establishments that sell beach food and drinks. The awards reward the best environmental initiatives launched by these establishments to promote, among citizens and the business sector, the dissemination of good environmental practices. Practices that have as their objective the improvement and conservation of the coastline in Spain.
