Global Change Monitoring Network in the National Parks Network

Development of an infrastructure for taking, storing and processing data “in situ”, for the development of a system for evaluating and monitoring the impacts that may be generated in the Network of Spanish National Parks as a result of global change.

Development of an infrastructure for taking, storing and processing data “in situ”, for the development of a system for evaluating and monitoring the impacts that may be generated in the Spanish National Parks Network as a result of global change in order to create an open database for use by the scientific community.

The objective of the initiative is to know the impacts that a territory may suffer as a result of Global Change, such as the set of environmental, social and economic changes that occur as a result of climate change.

To know these impacts, it is necessary to make an evaluation of the environmental effects that occur in the short, medium and long term, and their consequences on the availability of resources for the population. To this end, a series of actions are carried out, aimed at achieving the following results:

  • Creation and maintenance of a set of databases relating to the different meteorological and biological parameters that will be measured in the Network of Multiparametric Meteorological Stations.

  • To make available to the general public and to researchers in particular, in accessible electronic format, all the information collected and organized, raw or elaborated, obtained through the corresponding measurements and sampling, for the execution of evaluations that allow us to know the impacts derived from Global Change.

The data for carrying out these assessments are provided by the Network of Multiparametric Meteorological Stations, which was established thanks to the signing of a previous agreement: “Establishment of the global change monitoring network in the network of National Parks”, signed in 2005. This agreement consisted of the installation and commissioning of a Network of 17 Terrestrial Multiparametric Meteorological Stations and 1 oceanographic buoy for the collection of climate, air and water quality data in the National Parks Network.
