The Spanish Railways Foundation (FFE) has completed the project ‘VÍAS VERDES & RED NATURA 2000: Dissemination of Protected Natural Areas and Geoparks through the State Network of Greenways’. This initiative has had the support of the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for Ecological Transition within the framework of its 2017 call for grants.

Previously, the entity was a beneficiary of aid for different projects framed in the same objective of achieving the dissemination of natural environments and reducing the environmental impact by renovating old railway tracks. On this occasion, the objective has been to value the biodiversity in the surroundings of the greenways, promoting sustainable and respectful tourism.

To transfer this knowledge to society, an inventory of the Natural Areas, the Natura 2000 Network, the Network of Geoparks and greenways was carried out. Subsequently, with all the information collected and interconnected, a microsite and an application were generated, to have the information available on mobile phones, having available at all times the content on itineraries and their environmental component. The application, for the moment, includes 113 of the 126 itineraries, characterized by their special environmental value.
