The Conde Valle Salazar Foundation was a beneficiary in the 2015 Call for Grants of the Biodiversity Foundation with the project “Recovery of the Atlantic sturgeon (Acipenser sturio)”. Its objective was to carry out a series of preliminary actions necessary to complete before the implementation of a project to reintroduce the species in Spain.
The project has carried out an exhaustive review of the biology of the Atlantic sturgeon or plaice, the current state of its habitat in the basins under study, the risk factors for reintroduction and specific recommendations to address the recovery of the species. The Action Plan for the conservation and recovery of the European sturgeon of the Berne Convention has also been adapted to the circumstances of Spain. And collaborative links have been established with relevant organisations for the recovery of sollo, both at national and European level. In this sense, the collaboration with the Institut National de Recherche en Sciences et Technologies pour l’Environnement et l’Agriculture (IRSTEA) of France, the reference organization in plaice conservation and research, is particularly interesting.
