Knowing the effects of climate change on the populations of birds and butterflies in Menorca was the objective of the project ‘Improvement of knowledge, training and dissemination of the effects of climate change on biodiversity in the Menorca Biosphere Reserve’, which was launched by the Institut Menorquí d’Estudis (IME) with the support of the Biodiversity Foundation. within the framework of its call for aid.
Over the course of two decades, the Socio-Environmental Observatory of Menorca (OBSAM) has collected data on the evolution of bird and butterfly populations in the Menorca Biosphere Reserve, data that have been monitored through national and international standardised monitoring programmes.
The BIOCLIMA Menorca project has analysed the different long-term monitoring of biodiversity on the island of Menorca over the last 40 years. Climate and population databases have been generated that have made it possible to present the results of the analyses carried out by experts and different documents have been generated (informative publication, document of conclusions with proposals for mitigation and adaptation to climate change and long-term monitoring plan) as well as informative activities and technical conferences to publicize the effects of climate change on biodiversity on the island.
