SOS-Fartet: a project for the conservation of this endemic fish.

MITECO

The SOS-Fartet project has analysedthe current state of conservation of the fartet and its habitat in two natural parks on the coast of Girona that belong to the Natura 2000 Network. Population censuses have also been carried out and the ecological status of the habitat has been evaluated. Another of the main objectives of the project has been the creation of new refuge habitats and their subsequent adaptation for the establishment of new populations. They have also carried out an environmental improvement of the lagoon-refuge of Fartet located in the natural park of “Aiguamolls de I’Empordà”. Finally, to raise awareness among the population of the need to protect the fartet and its habitat, informative materials have been published to publicize the state of the species and its habitat.

The Balmes University Foundation has been in charge of the execution of the project, which has made it possible to improve the knowledge of the state of the species and its habitat in the area, in order to proceed to update and improve, if necessary, the management plans in both natural parks.

The project began with the location and monitoring of populations. The assessment of the ecological status of the habitat was the next step to continue with the adaptation and environmental improvement of the lagoon-refuge in Aiguamolls de l’Empordà and, finally, a project report has been drafted and its results have been disseminated in order to work on environmental awareness.
