The main objective is based on increasing the protection of environments near rivers and riverbanks through environmental awareness and volunteering:

The specific objectives are as follows:

  • Increase the number of people involved in nature conservation through environmental volunteering.
  • To reduce the degradation of natural spaces near rivers and banks in the areas of action.
  • Create collaborative networks for biodiversity conservation at the points of action, such as working with hydrographic confederations or other institutions.
  • Recruitment and training of volunteers through campaigns to support the project, publication on social networks, development of awareness-raising materials and delivery of training courses for volunteers on volunteering actions in rivers.
  • Awareness-raising and conservation actions with volunteering in rivers through; the programming of the different intervention actions in the environment with vulnerable groups and the neighbouring population, the contact with town councils and hydrographic confederations for the coordination of activities; holding workshops with vulnerable groups; activities for the conservation and restoration of rivers and riverbanks, waste removal, analysis of water quality and environmental monitoring; information on invasive alien species and evaluation of the project with local authorities.

The project “Volunteering and participation in rivers” has sought to combine citizen mobilization strategies with the institutional experience of recruitment, training and management of volunteering for social and environmental action. According to the Red Cross, this is why the initiative entails specific intervention in conservation and awareness-raising tasks throughout the national territory, through a campaign and the dissemination of good practices on how to protect the environment and at the same time protect the people who inhabit it.

For these activities, the creation of collaboration networks between the different social actors, local entities, city councils, universities, hydrographic confederations, environmental volunteers and the general population has been promoted.

During the development of the project, different dissemination materials have been available that, together with the activities of awareness and recovery of the environment , have sought to influence the entire population on the need to conserve the natural environment.
