Health impact of atmospheric events resulting from climate change

MITECO

“Evaluation of the impact on health of extreme atmospheric events caused by climate change -SINERGIA” is an initiative of the Center for Energy, Environmental and Technological Research (CIEMAT), which has the support of the Biodiversity Foundation.

The general objective of this study was to identify the impact on the health of the population of the metropolitan area of Madrid due to exposure to air pollution levels during the development of an extreme atmospheric event, such as the transport of African mineral dust. In addition, within the framework of the project, they have adopted measures to mitigate the adverse effects identified.

Within the framework of the project, 2 articles have been published in scientific journals, 8 papers have been presented in 3 international conferences. In addition, 2 meetings of an international scientific committee of interest on the activities of the project have been attended. A 60-page report detailing all the activities and results of the project has been prepared and distributed to institutions and administrations responsible for air quality and climate change. An information day has been held on “The impact on health of extreme atmospheric events caused by climate change” with the participation of prominent personalities from research centres and institutions of recognised prestige, in which 96 people have participated.
