Implementation of chain of custody for the furniture sector (IMCAMU)

Empleaverde program

The furniture sector in Spain has a significant number of companies, especially SMEs. The application of chain of custody certification for first processing companies (sawmills, panel manufacturers, slat manufacturers, etc.) is very common, however among second processing companies (furniture factories, carpentry/cabinetmakers, industrial carpentry, etc.) it is a less widespread practice.

The general objective of the IMCAMU project is to promote a change towards a more sustainable activity in companies in the wood and furniture sector in Spain, which reduces the environmental impact generated by their activities. This initiative also seeks to promote the certification of the chain of custody in these companies of the second transformation of wood, so as to guarantee that the effort made by the first manufacturing companies is effectively transmitted through the entire value chain.

The activities to be developed aim, on the one hand, to change the awareness of companies and workers in the furniture and wood sector towards a more respectful and involved attitude towards the environment and, on the other, to provide them with knowledge, skills and tools that allow them to undertake the necessary changes to make their activity more sustainable: mainly the use of materials with a lower environmental impact such as certified wood and subsidiarily others such as energy saving, reduction and recovery of waste, etc.

The recipients are mainly workers from Spanish carpentry and furniture companies, which are mostly SMEs and micro-SMEs. Likewise, independent professionals from the sector are also recipients of the project actions: self-employed carpenters, architects, independent consultants, etc.

With these actions, the training of 150 recipients is planned, although the project will reach a total of 280 workers; the certification of 20 companies in the chain of custody; that 60% of the companies participating in the project buy certified wood from an eco-managed forest
