NETFISH – Generation of a network of the Cantabrian fishing industry and AZTI scientists

Pleamar program

Description:

The objective set has been the competitiveness and sustainable development of fishing activity through the permanent provision of environmental, biological and socio-economic information, essential for the design of policies and economic development plans for a wide range of fleet segments and regions. In addition, it sought to establish a solid basis for the transfer of knowledge between regions and agents, and to promote issues related to the application of the Common Fisheries Policy, such as those linked to the development strategy of the local action group, a collaborator of the proposal.

In the long term, the objective is to become a recognized network of collaboration of supra-autonomous institutions, made up of experts in the field of marine knowledge and research. In this way, it will cover a wide range of activity segments and topics, institutions and regions. The creation of the network has also allowed members to explore funding opportunities such as Horizon 2020 and European Territorial Cooperation opportunities, favouring territorial innovation in the fisheries sector. In addition, the network promotes the development of practical initiatives in the Northwest Cantabrian Regions and the creation of strategic alliances.

General Objective:

The proposal proposes the creation of a network of agents: fishermen’s associations, institutions dedicated to marine research, local action groups and their corresponding regional authorities, with an interest in knowing and valuing marine resources.

Specific objectives:

  1. Identification of agents that could potentially be members of the network
  2. Formal network protocol design
  3. Design of the network viability plan
  4. Official launch and commissioning of the network
  5. Project Executive Summary

The execution of the project has allowed the creation of a network to promote joint work and the transfer of knowledge between the various agents linked to the fishing sector of the Northwest Cantabrian Sea. A total of 18 organisations have joined it (28% Asturian, 33% Cantabrian and 39% Basque), including federations of fishermen’s guilds, producer organisations, FLAGs, women’s associations, institutions dedicated to marine research, local action groups and their corresponding regional authorities.

Through this network, comparable socio-economic information on fishing activity was designed and compiled, as well as environmental and biological information on marine resources, and is used to support various sustainable development initiatives in the fishing sector in the geographical area of the Northwest Cantabrian Sea in the future.

The visibility plan developed sought to publicize the network and, in particular, all the aspects contemplated in the formal protocol. The participants in the project have been involved in its dissemination, especially among the different stakeholders of the Basque Country, Cantabria and Asturias.

It is intended that, in the long term, NetFish will consolidate itself as a supra-regional reference network, for consultation and regional collaboration between agents linked to the fishing sector, which pursues the exchange of knowledge and experiences in relation to technical improvements, innovation, research, conservation and management of marine resources and sustainable growth.
