MIMECCA – Development of environmental innovation measures for the establishment of protocols for carrying capacity that ensure sustainable development of aquaculture. (MIMECCA).

Pleamar program

Description:

There are many agents interested in boosting productive activity to boost its growth. Therefore, it is important to establish the carrying capacity of the ecosystems in which this activity is carried out in order to achieve a dimensioned and stable productive situation, in accordance with the minimum requirements for stabilization of the presence in aquaculture products markets.

With this project, the aim has been to identify the environmental, social and productive interactions that occur in the development of the activity with the aim of increasing the level of knowledge for better sectoral management, developing and applying protocols and innovative measures to establish the carrying capacity. To obtain these protocols, a detailed study of the different production models in natural spaces has been carried out, taking into account the following aspects: assimilation capacity, productive load capacity, environmental load capacity and social load.

At the same time, different quantifiable indicators (according to defined theme) have been specified to model the development of aquaculture, applying the Principle-Criterion-Indicator (PCI) methodology to establish the relationships between the indicators and the principles within the corresponding framework. In addition, the criteria for selecting the indicators followed those defined as SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Committed to Time.

General Objective:

To develop innovative measures applied to establish the carrying capacity in aquaculture that allows promoting an improvement in Production Management through sustainable planning.

Specific objectives:

  1. To increase the level of knowledge about the productive, environmental and socio-economic interactions related to the development of sustainable aquaculture.
  2. Establish protocols related to the carrying capacity of the system, taking into account physical, environmental, productive and social aspects.
  3. Transfer the planned developments to the sector in order to promote the balance of installation-ecosystem interactions.

The The MIMECCA project has achieved its goal of increasing the level of knowledge about the interactions of aquaculture production and their influence on sustainability. To achieve this, two carrying capacity protocols were developed in two production models, applicable to the cultivation of nurseries in the open sea and to semi-intensive cultivation in estuaries. These protocols were developed based on scientific information – productive and oceanographic data – and surveys carried out on different aquaculture companies in the Mediterranean, the south-Atlantic coast and different aquaculture business associations. The results obtained were compiled and evaluated to agree on sustainability measures that encompass most of the technical-productive, environmental and socioeconomic indicators.

From the development of the protocols, CTAQUA has carried out actions to transfer the results to publicize its project to companies linked to aquaculture and it is expected to give continuity to this project to develop a simulation and on-site evaluation of the results obtained.
