REDMAR II. Programme for the promotion of experiences on board and improvement of the exchange of good practices in the Network, in the field of equal opportunities, safety on board and the environment.

Pleamar program

Description:

The project arises as a continuation of REDMAR, developed in 2011 within the framework of EFF, in order to continue its line of work, strengthening and expanding the network, and to promote the employability of women graduates in maritime-fishing training, as well as the exchange of good practices in terms of safety on board, the environment and gender equality.

One of the biggest problems that women face when working on this type of fishing vessel is that, beyond the fact that the vessels are not adapted to their needs and the design and structure are only designed for life on board for men, the ship-owning companies do not think of them as part of their crew. There are still many gender stereotypes that prevent women from going on board ships. For this reason, women are underrepresented in all vocational training cycles in the Maritime-Fisheries branch. It is necessary to offer women graduates access to the labour market and the development of their professional careers normally in this sector.

REDMAR II has offered, in a pioneering way, the insertion of women graduates in Vocational Training from the Maritime-Fishing family. Although there are currently several women’s associations and organisations related to the fishing sector that defend equal rights between women and men and offer advice (e.g. AKTEA, the Spanish Network of Women in the Fisheries Sector, AMUPESCA, etc.), it is considered necessary to create a complete network of communication and exchange involving the public sector, shipowners, fishermen’s associations, non-governmental organizations, etc., and that allows the development of initiatives aimed at the inclusion of women in the sector, overcoming the obstacles that exist today and taking advantage of the advantages and opportunities offered by networking.

Execution date:

2018

General Objective:

Strengthen the REDMAR network and promote the employability of women graduates in maritime-fisheries training, as well as the exchange of good practices in terms of safety on board, the environment and gender equality.

Specific objectives:

  1. Consolidate and expand the network established in the REDMAR project.
  2. To promote and carry out embarkation experiences for graduates in maritime-fishing training on board ships.
  3. To promote the exchange of good practices in the areas of safety on board, the environment and gender.

The implementation of the REDMAR II project has allowed the consolidation and expansion of the REDMAR Network, created in 2013, for the exchange of good practices in the fisheries sector. In this way, communication links between collaborators and partners have been strengthened through the REDMAR web portal, where a forum was established to participate and exchange knowledge on good practices. Three workshops were also held within the framework of the project:

  • Diagnosis of the sector, the strategy to increase the number of nautical graduates and their employability
  • On-board waste management: regulations, training and adaptation
  • Gender Perspective in Prevention in Occupational Risks and Safety

Among the conclusions obtained from the project, it is worth highlighting:

  • The nautical-fishing schools believe it is necessary to promote fishing training in secondary and baccalaureate schools, with the aim of making the sector attractive to the new generations. In addition, it is considered necessary to introduce the gender perspective in a transversal way in the curriculum of these teachings.
  • There is a need for training, both in Maritime Fisheries Polytechnic Institutes and in crew members’ working periods, in waste management and environmental matters.
  • The introduction of the gender perspective in the ORP of vessels is positive to promote equal opportunities for access to jobs on board between men and women, favouring the improvement of working conditions in general for all.

Entities likely to be interested in the project were contacted and 15 new ones joined the network, five of them maritime-fishing training. The network is made up of a total of 18 entities, including the Spanish Network of Women in the Fishing Sector, CEPESCA, ARVI and Fundación Mujeres, among others.

The project also promoted the embarkation of trained women on fishing vessels. Out of a total of 25 applications, eight met the necessary requirements to embark. Finally, two women embarked as second bridge officers (on a deep-sea trawler and a coastal purse seine). Fundamar and OPPC-3 monitored the contracting process and carried out training in good practices in terms of safety on board, gender equality and the environment for both the person hired and the shipowner. As a result of the experience, a report of conclusions on shipments was prepared, accompanied by videos and photographs. The two women provided positive feedback on the experience, highlighting the good atmosphere and interaction with the crew, the absence of difficulties during boarding and the lack of adaptation of the facilities to a mixed crew.
