Fishermen, custodians of the Natura 2000 Network at sea

Pleamar program

Description

The project has encouraged the direct and active involvement of fishermen together with researchers and managers in the implementation of electronic monitoring systems (EMS) of marine ecosystems.
Specifically, they have been involved in a process where they are made custodians of the conservation of the pelagic Natura 2000 Network values and beneficiaries of the future ocean forecasting and observation platforms (PPOO).
To this end, two longline fishing vessels have served as a central platform for a demonstrative pilot action for the development of electronic monitoring systems (EMS) for bluefin tuna, turtle and shark.

  • Acoustic telemetry tagging campaigns for bluefin tuna, loggerhead turtles and sharks and monitoring of their movements and habitat use in relation to data obtained by oceanography platforms
  • Data analysis and integration into reference PPOOs
  • Information on actions on a service platform for fishermen and the fishing sector.
