BAJUREC III - Prevention of the generation of waste and its inadequate disposal in the maritime environment focused on inshore fishing vessels and recreational boats.

Pleamar program

Description

The project, a continuation of BAJUREC II, promoted in the previous call of the Pleamar Programme (2018), aims to improve the management of waste generated by the fishing sector and reduce the amount of waste existing in coastal areas and the sea, contributing to a better conservation of marine biological resources and the protection of the maritime areas of the Natura 2000 Network.

To this end, the methodology for data collection and quality control will be designed and a database will be created to know the current situation of waste infrastructures and the use made of them in Spanish fishing ports.

The information collected will be made available to the authorities and the interested public so that the corresponding decisions can be taken to allow an adequate treatment of the waste, avoiding its dumping at sea.

Status:

Finalizado

Execution date:

2019

General:

Improve the management of waste generated by the fisheries sector and reduce the amount of waste in coastal areas and the sea, contributing to a better conservation of marine biological resources and the protection of the maritime areas of the Natura 2000 Network. The project in its entirety covers the entire coastal and island area of Spain (except Ceuta and Melilla).

Specific:

1. Design of the methodology for data collection, quality control and creation of the database that allows us to know the current situation of waste infrastructures and the use made of them in Spanish fishing ports.

2. To obtain information on the situation of existing waste infrastructures and the use made of them in Spanish fishing ports.

3. Make available to the authorities and the interested public what is the current situation of the waste infrastructures and the use made of them in Spanish fishing ports so that the appropriate decisions can be taken to allow an adequate treatment of the waste avoiding its dumping at sea.

Activities:

-Definition of the information to be obtained.

-Design of the database (including its association with a geographic information system) where this information will be dumped.

-Design of a Field Visit Form that will serve to incorporate the information into the database.

-Statistical definition of the number of samplings to be carried out.

-On-site verification methodology.

-Contact the ports for data collection permission.

-Training of personnel who will take field data.

-Carrying out field data collection in the 359 fishing ports throughout the Spanish coastal area (except Ceuta and Melilla) and filling in forms.

-Control of the data obtained in accordance with the defined methodology.

-Treatment of the information received for its incorporation into the reports.

-Incorporation of the information in the database.

-Drafting of the final report.

-Incorporation of the database in the section of the Clean Landscape website dedicated to this task.

The content will be interactive and based on a geographic information system

The beneficiary entity, Asociación Paisaje Limpio, and its partner, the National Federation of Fishermen’s Guilds, have satisfactorily developed the set of activities planted in the BAJUREC III project, favoring a more efficient and effective management of the waste generated by the fishing sector and thus reducing the amount of existing waste in coastal areas and the sea.

During the course of the initiative, an occurrence table was designed to define the number of samplings with a pilot test in the ten ports of Galicia: Aldán, Cangas, Moaña, Meira, Domaio, San Adrián de Cobres, Santa Cristina de Cobres, Bueu, Aguete and Beluso. A methodology was designed for data collection through a file, the quality control of the information and the creation of a database in Acess, which allows us to know the current situation of waste infrastructures and the use made of them.

Subsequently, the database was completed with the information collected in a total of 161 fishing ports in Galicia and Andalusia. In turn, this information was incorporated into a GIS map, available to the authorities and the interested public through the Clean Landscape website. This space includes files with detailed information for each port: general characteristics of the port, facilities, fishing activity, waste generated, clean points and infrastructures on land. The aim is for this information to serve as a basis for the competent authorities to implement appropriate measures to allow optimal treatment of waste, preventing its dumping at sea and considering the measures of the European Directive on port reception facilities for the delivery of waste from ships.

To disseminate the project, Paisaje Limpio developed and disseminated an awareness-raising video on social networks. Information about the project was also shared on the entity’s social networks, in addition to the celebration of a day of presentation of results and participation in other events.
