General:
To achieve greater awareness and improvement of the sustainability of fishing and the marine environment from childhood, since it is a group in continuous learning and that can act as an element of awareness in society in the face of new challenges such as marine litter or the sustainability of our marine and fishing habitats through the knowledge and consumption of sustainable fishing. Children will therefore be the guiding axis of the project.
Specific:
1. Analyse in a participatory way the didactic and pedagogical contents necessary to carry out a correct training action for children in matters of environmental and fisheries sustainability in accordance with the SDGs.
2. To disseminate the problems and challenges of the marine environment and the need to move towards a more sustainable management of natural and fisheries resources in Spain, especially in marine protected areas, encouraging participation and reflection on the main threats and challenges to the marine environment and resources.
3. To improve the knowledge of Spanish children in the areas of healthy eating, knowledge and protection of the marine environment, encouraging active positions in defence of the marine environment and sustainable fishing.
1.- ACTION: DEVELOPMENT OF DIDACTIC UNITS ON FISHERIES AND MARINE SUSTAINABILITY FOR EDUCATIONAL CENTERS: Our main objective would be to provide training in schools from a technical point of view and from a practical point of view. To this end, teaching units will be developed adapted to the educational level of children from a to 12 years old. These units would be prepared by technical personnel with scientific knowledge and personnel from the fishing sector (shipowners, fishermen, ARVI personnel,….) making it enjoyable, concise and with basic explanations, with didactic material appropriate to the different ages for which it is supposed to be taught. The range of application of the awareness would be the stage of 6-9 years (stage of initiation to knowledge of the natural environment in general) and finally stage of 9-12 years (final stage of primary education where children have certain knowledge and where more work would be done on the logical and reasoning aspect). For each range, didactic units on the problems of fisheries sustainability would be developed for use in each center. 2 demonstrative pilot actions would be developed in two educational centers in the province of Pontevedra that will be able to move to the Atlantic Islands Park and other fishing spaces in the city of Vigo.
2.- ACTION: STANDS CHILDREN FOR THE SEA In addition, in addition to the training, two specific actions would be developed in events of national fishing relevance, specifically, disseminating the project at the Vigo Seafest Fair that is organized in the city of Vigo and at the Juvenalia Fair (Madrid). In these events, a stand would be set up with activities for children, information would be given to parents who come with children and different games would be played (digital format or through popular games) where the basic concepts that are made known about sustainable fishing could be applied. At this same point and when working with families, sustainable cooking workshops will be developed in the family where parents and children collaborate and where a sustainable fish product is used and the importance of a healthy diet based on sustainable fish, as well as showcookings with different sustainable fish products.
3.- ACTION: NATIONAL CHILDREN’S FOR A SUSTAINABLE SEA CONTEST After the training, a contest would be held for children from schools throughout Spain on How would you contribute to improving the sustainability of fishing? in which they would compete in the modalities of photography and writing, depending on the age ranges in which the training was divided, and in which the prize would be a trip of the winning child of each category to different to the city of Vigo (Pontevedra), to visit the Atlantic Islands National Park, research centres, the city’s food squares, fishing areas such as the Lonja or the boats in the port, the Museum of the Sea and the city’s seafaring tradition and its incomparable natural environment. Any school-age child defined in the teaching units through social networks may participate in this contest. The place where the works must be submitted for presentation will be indicated
4.- DISSEMINATION ON SOCIAL NETWORKS AND THE PRESS This action covers all publicity and dissemination activities of the project. All actions, activities to be carried out, participation in events, publication of documents, etc. will be transferred and communicated using various media, tools and ICTs, such as emails, circulars, websites, press, radio, television and/or social networks. All the materials published will be published at least on the website of the cooperative of shipowners of the port of Vigo and the micro web space developed for this project, to make them available to any interested party in addition to the recipients of the project (school-age children and educational centers). In addition, all the products generated will be sent to other actors, entities and/or competent authorities in the matter.
5.- FINAL DISSEMINATION ACTION: RESULTS DAY: Aimed at the educational, environmental and institutional sector as well as other relevant actors in the fishing field. This action will make it possible to publicise the results of the project, as well as to disseminate the project in general. It will also capture the interest and encourage the participation and commitment of new groups as well as try to guarantee the durability of the project’s results.
ECOSEAS has made it possible to develop different dissemination and awareness-raising activities. Among them, two didactic units were designed, developed thanks to coordination with teachers and pedagogues. For the development of this activity, the entity Teachers for Future, a group that promotes training actions in Spanish schools on issues of climate change and sustainability, was also contacted. A pilot day with the teaching material was held on the island of Ons, with the participation of 36 schoolchildren, 10 years old. Another telematic day was also held, with schoolchildren from the Basque Country. The teaching units were sent to more than 9,000 schools throughout Spain.
To encourage the participation of the project’s target group, the Sustainable Cabin Boys competition was launched with two categories: drawing (6-9 years old) and writing (10-12 years old). 103 works, 59 essays and 44 drawings were received. The winners, chosen by two juries made up of different entities, in addition to ARVI, were able to visit the Port of Vigo, as well as the Atlantic Islands of Galicia and the Museum of the Sea of Vigo. An awards ceremony was held at the ARVI facilities.
ECOSEAS also developed dissemination actions on digital channels. To this end, three informative videos were produced. The first of them focused on raising awareness of the relevance of sustainable fishing in the Spanish fleet. The second addresses the problem of terrestrial waste in the sea, to promote a sustainable use of these materials. And finally, the third video aims to train schoolchildren about the activities and measures available to the fishing sector to prevent accidental capture. In addition, a day of presentation of results was held, with the presence of 40 participants.
