FISHMONGERS 4 SEALIFE

Pleamar program

Description

A feasibility study will be carried out that will analyse all aspects of the collection of fishery products that, due to the operation of the market, are not going to be marketed (never in poor condition), mainly by the fish retail sector. The adhesion of other fishing sectors to the project will be studied. A pilot experience will be carried out and in this way they can be analysed with real experience and dissemination of this project.
The aim is to improve the efficiency of the fishing chain in general and the retail sector in particular, since if these products were discarded, they would also waste the resources invested in their capture/production.
Society will learn about this initiative through dissemination, which will give added value to fishery products, thanks to these environmental strategies that aim to protect marine biodiversity through the use of resources.

Line of action:

Marine ecosystems

Status:

Finalizado

Execution date:

2020

The objective of the project is to raise awareness in society and the fish retail sector about the importance of the protection and recovery of marine biodiversity, which will be the main axis of the project, but also about the limitation of the impact of fishing on the marine environment or the conservation of biological resources and the collaboration of the sector.

Specific objectives of the project:

This project aims to raise awareness of the importance of the protection and recovery of marine biodiversity, promote the conservation and use of biological resources, evaluate the viability of exploitation initiatives related to marine species recovery centers, enhance the value of fishery and aquaculture products and links in the chain with environmental characteristics or responsible production, and the general dissemination of the project so that it reaches the largest number of people and entities in the fishing chain to whom it can serve as inspiration.

The main objectives of the FISHMONGERS 4 SEALIFE project were to improve the protection of biodiversity, to disseminate the importance of maintaining biodiversity, to make better use of resources, to generate a way of collaboration between the fishing chain and centres dedicated to the recovery of marine animals and to add value to fishery products. through environmental projects.

To achieve these objectives, various activities have been carried out. Among them, a pilot experience has been carried out that has consisted of the donation by traditional fishmongers of fishery products in good condition and that for market reasons are not marketed. These products have been sent to the project partner, the CRAM Foundation, a marine biodiversity recovery centre. Through 2 shipments, a total of 100 kg of donated product has been sent, thus verifying the viability of sending products from traditional fishmongers to marine biodiversity recovery centers.

Another result of the project has been the preparation of a document that analyzes in depth all the information related to this type of donation. This document collects logistical information, obtained largely through the pilot experience, food safety, traceability, among others. Through this document, which is called “Feasibility study of the donation and shipment of fishery products to marine animal recovery centers in Spain”, the following conclusions have been obtained:

  • There is currently no legislation in force in Spain aimed at regulating the donation of food products for animal consumption, with only the regulation of the donation of food for human consumption. That is why this document has been proposed from the legislation on donations for human consumption.
  • Likewise, there is a gap in the legislation for the donation of food products by non-food companies such as Organizations or Associations representing the food sector, even if this donation is made in safe conditions. This gap reduces the possibilities of donation, despite the fact that there are adequate measures for it.
  • For a correct donation that guarantees food safety at all times, it is necessary to know the journey of the product through the production chain to the recipient of the donation, which is why the entire traceability process between each link must be collected.
  • For retail food establishments that participate in food donation, a number of additional prerequisites are recommended: Shelf Life Control. Handling of donated food. Evaluation for food donation, including evaluation of remaining shelf life. Freezing of food intended for donation.
  • Freezing and packaging food before it exceeds its expiration date or loss of safety will extend its shelf life and allow its safe redistribution.
  • The facilities of the entity receiving the product must be taken into account, as well as the characteristics of the product to be donated, and the logistics of transport.
  • It is advisable to prepare a liability exemption document specifying the intention with which the food product is intended by the donor company, in which the donor is not responsible for the use of the donated product beyond the purpose of the action.
  • The requirements established by legislation for the donation of products for human consumption, as well as the aspects not included in Spanish regulations, make it difficult to donate products and therefore the reuse of resources that can otherwise become food waste
