The Waste Lab Bizkaia, a reference centre that promotes research, innovation, experimentation and collaboration around sustainability in waste management and the circular economy in the field of waste prevention and management, offers a programme consisting of eleven training modules and two challenges, for the acquisition or improvement of green employment skills that will be aimed at working professionals in the industry, technological and economic fields, both emerging and long-standing, and who will be offered a differentiated value proposition in accordance with their needs and expectations.

The ultimate goal of the training will be for the people who attend the course to be able to draw up a Waste Management Plan for their company, which seeks to improve the prevention, preparation for reuse and recycling of waste within the scope of their activity, in a way that is respectful of the environment and aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals.

  1. Module 1: Introduction to the circular economy, where fundamental knowledge on the circular economy will be offered as a tool to redesign the current economic model towards new models that allow sustainable economic development.
  2. Module 2: Regulatory Framework and Circular Economy Policies, a module that will explain the legal framework and public policies related to the transition to the circular economy in Bizkaia. A tour will be made of the regulatory framework of the circular economy, since the approval of the Spanish circular economy strategy, to focus on the Basque Country 2030 Circular Economy Strategy.
  3. Module 3: Diagnosis of the current situation of the company, a module in which students will learn to evaluate the current situation of the company and draw up an action plan for the company to move towards a production and consumption model that focuses on the reduction of waste and the reuse of resources. The purpose will be for the company to implement certain actions that reduce the environmental impact, improve the company’s operational efficiency and discover new commercial opportunities.
  4. Module 4: Design and redesign of products, a module through which the aim will be to motivate and promote among the attendees towards the design and redesign of processes and products to optimise the use of non-renewable natural resources in production, encouraging the incorporation of secondary raw materials and recycled materials and minimising the incorporation of harmful substances. in order to obtain products that are more easily recyclable and recoverable, redirecting the economy towards a more efficient and sustainable model.
  5. Module 5: Implementation of circular practices in production: After carrying out an analysis of the processes in which the company’s material resources or raw materials are involved and determining where the company’s waste is produced, attendees must be able to define clear goals and objectives to achieve the implementation of the circular economy in the company.
  6. Module 6: Circular business models, where the objective will be to understand and analyse the different business models that exist around the phenomenon of the circular economy, in which cases of companies that make use of renewable energies, biomass or recyclable materials to replace non-renewable resources, companies that have implemented sustainable design to extend the life cycle of products and components through repair, will be presented. updating and reselling and business models that have replaced the product model with the service model and the replacement of ownership with shared use.
  7. Module 7: Management of resources and raw materials, the objective of which will be to raise awareness among professionals of the participating companies of the need to move towards a circular economy model, motivated by the increase in demand for finite raw materials and scarcity of resources, as well as for reasons of dependence on other countries and the direct impact produced on the climate.
  8. Module 8: Communication and awareness-raising, where they will try to develop skills to communicate and raise awareness about the circular economy initiatives developed within the entity, so that both employees and the outside public are aware, supported, involved, and even participate in the process actively and continuously.
  9. Module 9: Part I: Preparation of a waste prevention plan, where participants will be trained to develop their own waste prevention plan, since it will be the one that dictates the changes to be made, as well as the steps that each person must follow to carry out this, how to do it, the deadlines, etc. the necessary resources.

Part 2: Green transition programme of the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, where the Circular Economy programmes aimed at SMEs will be presented with the aim of encouraging companies in Bizkaia to reduce their ecological footprint, supporting the measurement of their net environmental impact and environmental innovation projects aligned with the circular economy. All the keys to the aid programmes will be indicated, as well as what characteristics the projects must meet in order for companies to be able to access the subsidies.

  1. Gender equality module: The purpose of this module will be to promote and develop training and awareness-raising actions on equal opportunities between men and women that eliminate the existing gap between legal and real equality. The objective of the module will be to raise awareness among men and women of the social value of equality as an axis for social development and to promote that professions from different fields incorporate the gender perspective in the exercise of work activities.
  2. Soft Skills Module: The module will be aimed at promoting creativity, critical thinking, continuous questioning and daring to experiment. The trainers will use different techniques and participatory dynamics that will aim to generate participation, analysis, reflection and an active attitude.
  3. Materially Innovation Challenge: The objective of the challenge launched will be to find solutions for the application and development of advanced materials to the most demanding challenges of the industry, from the selection and adaptation of the material, to industrialization and supply.
  4. Biok Innovation Challenge: The objective of the “Biok” open innovation challenge is to promote the generation of new business opportunities through innovation and collaboration and, on the other hand, to strengthen the position of companies in the waste management sector, giving them access to local and international talent and skills, which will offer innovative solutions that generate value and increase their competitiveness.
  • The 30 workers initially planned have signed up for the “Training Programme in Waste Management and Prevention in your company”.
  • Of the people registered, 57% are women and 43% are men.
  • Of the people registered, 37% are young people between the ages of 18 and 29, 30% are between 29-45 years old and the remaining 33% are over 45 years old.
