Sustainable Environmental Management of Rainwater and Regattas in Donostia / San Sebastián (PluSSS)

PRTR Call for Proposals Project

The project aims to reduce the risk of flooding in the Amara neighbourhood of Donostia / San Sebastián, by reducing peak flows and volumes discharged into the Anoeta stream. The aim is to adapt the city to the effects of climate change while improving the river ecosystem with the implementation of nature-based solutions.

Urban environments

Status:

En ejecución

Location:

Donostia / San Sebastián, Guipúzcoa (Basque Country)

Execution date:

2022

Amount of aid from the Biodiversity Foundation:

€1,674,504.19

Coordinating entity:

Donostia City Council / San Sebastián

The main problem that this project plans to solve is the risk of flooding due to rainwater in the urban environment of the Amara neighbourhood and the Anoeta sports area (basin of the Anoeta regatta), as well as improving the quality of the Ibaeta alder grove and restoring a section of the Morlans regatta.

PluSSS proposes to modify the current situation, in which all the rainwater generated in the basin of the Anoeta regatta ends up in the lower area of the same, in the urban environment of the Amara neighborhood. This situation generates problems in case of heavy rains, which negatively impacts the inhabitants of the area. The project will also promote the restoration of a wetland and the recovery of a regatta section in the urban environment of the Ibaeta neighbourhood, to increase its resilience.

Some of the actions included in this project are:

  • Open-air green infrastructure in urban forest to control peak rainwater flows and improve the quality of water discharged into the Urumea River.
  • Environmental recovery of riverbeds in Ibaeta and Morlans.
