Medina de Rioseco is a municipality with outstanding cultural and natural values; but it lacks an urban and river renaturation strategy capable of valuing them and ordering the different actions that could be carried out. This implies that the specific actions that are developed do so without the support of a global vision and without pre-established criteria that favor the environmental improvement of the municipality. MDR has water resources of great potential value, including the Sequillo River itself, but these elements lack ecological continuity.
In the area located between the eastern half of the old perimeter of the historic site and the course of the Sequillo River, there is a residential area of public promotion from the 70s and 80s and a public park located at the back of the houses, where the trees have no important entity and merge with the wasteland that extends to the northeast. occupying an abandoned municipal lot.
According to data from the National System of Cartography of Flood Zones (SNCZI) and the Duero Hydrographic Confederation, in Medina de Rioseco there is a large flood zone on the banks of the Sequillo River that threatens the Historic Site of the city on its right bank, as well as a set of livestock and agricultural farms.
The project focuses on an area of the Sequillo River with a high probability of flooding and deficient in terms of the ecological status in the morphological conditions of the structure of the riverside area. RÍO-RÚA contemplates a plan for urban and river renaturation and civil protection against flood risk and implementation of activities in the territory for the recovery and integration of the river ecosystem. Thus, it will improve the body of water, recover a course of the Sequillo river to avoid saturation and create a new restored landscape, which will integrate the natural heritage and the Historic Complex, protecting biodiversity and improving the urban resilience of the riverside environment.
Some actions contemplated in this project are:
Restoration and integration of the river ecosystem of the Sequillo River as it passes through the Historic Complex of Medina de Rioseco (RÍO-RÚA)
