PRTR Call for Proposals Project

Santander Capital Natural (SCN) proposes the strengthening of the network of urban green areas, both public and private, in the conservation of biodiversity on a local scale. With a significant effort in the field of environmental education and participation, SCN also intends to use green areas to reconnect the urban population with nature, and thus expand social support for its conservation.

SCN seeks to make a significant investment in natural capital in the municipality, improving knowledge about municipal green infrastructure, urban biodiversity and future climate scenarios; developing plans and instruments that plan a greener municipality; carrying out transformative actions that raise asphalt and concrete to replace them with green areas, that naturalise school playgrounds, that reinforce the urban forest, that contribute to conserving and increasing urban biodiversity and that recover degraded urban and peri-urban spaces.
The project will bring nature into the classroom, bring classrooms out into nature, and invite neighbors to participate in its study and conservation.

SCN will involve the radical consolidation of a Green and Blue Infrastructure, with the transformation of public space in favour of renaturation (transformation of large paved surfaces into permeable soils covered by vegetation and urban mini-forests), the regeneration of degraded areas and the creation of new public use of urban areas and renaturalised educational centres.
Based on the generation of climate scenarios, vulnerable areas will be identified and necessary urban adaptation measures will be defined. The planned actions will also contribute to the health of citizens and equitable urban accessibility, improving microclimatic and hygrothermal conditions and increasing the presence of birds in the city. The generation of draining soils will mean a change in the urbanization model by incorporating urban mini-forests that reduce environmental and noise pollution, all of which will contribute to the improvement of quality of life and resilience.

The results of the project will be lasting over time, not only because of its imprint on the territory, but also because the Awareness and Participation Actions (Network of Terraces for Biodiversity, Natural Schools for Change, Participatory Workshops), will allow not only to co-create the SCN Strategy, but also to transfer examples of sustainable lifestyles with workshops, training or summer courses, promoting the benefits for biodiversity, adaptation to climate change
and health.
