The jury of the Spanish section of the European Business Awards for the Environment met today at the headquarters of the Biodiversity Foundation to assess the candidatures submitted to the contest convened by the Directorate-General for the Environment of the European Commission.

In this edition, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment (MAGRAMA), through the Biodiversity Foundation, coordinates the Spanish section of these awards that represent an important recognition of their environmental performance for the winning companies.

A jury made up of 10 experts in sustainability and business and chaired by the Biodiversity Foundation through its director, Sonia Castañeda, has evaluated the 99 applications received.

In this edition, representatives of the MAGRAMA, the CEOE, WWF-Adena, the Ecology and Development Foundation, IDAE, IE Business School, CDTI Center for the Development of Industrial Technology, ICTA-Autonomous University of Barcelona, the CSIC General Foundation and the Spanish Global Compact Network have participated as members of the jury.

The experts have evaluated the projects that opt for the four categories of competition and that allow to recognize business management initiatives for sustainable development, innovative products and services, as well as business processes and projects of international cooperation that promote sustainable development. For each of the categories, a distinction has been made between large companies and SMEs.

In addition, this edition has the special category ‘Business and biodiversity’, whose winner will be selected from among the companies that opt for any of the four previous categories.

Jury decision and awards ceremony

The jury’s decision will be announced at the awards ceremony on 5 June 2014. As in previous editions, the event will be attended by HRH the Prince and Princess of Asturias, who will present the awards. The winners will participate in the European Business Awards for the Environment and will represent Spanish companies in this European competition.

The European Business Awards for the Environment of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for the Environment have been awarded since 1987 to recognize companies that stand out for their environmental performance. Any company from an EU Member State or candidate country can apply.
