Methodological developments for the generation of Green Infrastructure mapping and the management of connectivity and ecological restoration in Asturias (IVASTUR)

FEDER

The project seeks to develop mapping of biodiversity and ecosystem services (ES) in the forest ecosystems of Asturias, in line with the Green Infrastructure Strategy. To this end, high-resolution sensors and model species of great conservation value (Cantabrian capercaillie, black woodpecker, medium-sized woodpecker and lesser woodpecker) will be used in order to analyse ecological connectivity. The algorithms generated will allow the automatic and dynamic processing of cartography, identifying priority areas for ecological restoration and contributing to the maintenance of biodiversity, the provision of ES and the improvement of connectivity in the territory.

The proposal is part of the National Green Infrastructure Strategy and responds to the challenge of integrating biodiversity, ecosystem services and ecological connectivity into the territorial planning of the Principality of Asturias. The region presents a highly fragmented and diverse landscape, where forest and river systems act as key backbones for conservation. Through the advanced use of remote sensors, UAVs and LiDAR, innovative methodologies will be developed to map biodiversity, assess connectivity and generate robust indicators adapted to the complexity of the territory. This multidisciplinary approach will provide strategic tools for sustainable management, contributing to resilience to climate change and the effective implementation of green infrastructure in Asturias.

Develop specific methodology for the evaluation and generation of Green Infrastructure cartography adapted to the Asturian territory.

The project includes a set of integrated actions in the Principality of Asturias that range from the development of new technologies to management and dissemination. First, progress will be made in the development of technologies for the generation of thematic mapping of ecosystem services (A1), as well as in the creation of specific methodologies for the assessment of biodiversity (A2). At the same time, work will be done on the design of methodologies and tools that allow the definition of ecological connectivity and strategic connectors in the territory (A3). The assessment, determination and mapping of the regional Green Infrastructure (A4) will also be promoted. Finally, the management and monitoring of the project will be guaranteed (A5), along with communication, awareness-raising and dissemination actions aimed at society (A6).
