Consolidation of the black vulture in Western Iberia (Aegypius return)

LIFE

  • The project seeks to guarantee the conservation of the black vulture in western Spain, improving its habitat by improving the quality and quantity of food and reducing threats.
  • The aim is to consolidate the breeding colonies and expand their distribution area. To this end, the improvement of the availability and safety of the nests will be addressed, the habitat will be managed to prevent fires, unfenced dunghills and feeding areas will be established and measures will be implemented to mitigate the risk of poisoning.

This project aims to conserve and expand the black vulture (Aegypius monachus) in Castilla y León and Extremadura, in order to ensure its long-term stability in the Iberian Peninsula.

It has the following specific objectives:

  • Manage the tasks of the project to promote the conservation of the black vulture.
  • To support the growth of the black vulture breeding population in the Iberian West, improving the reproductive success of their colonies in areas far from disturbances, through habitat management in Extremadura to increase the resilience of plant formations to fires.
  • Ensure a sustainable and quality supply of food for the black vulture by maintaining the dunghills by promoting feeding areas without enclosures.
  • To increase knowledge about the effects of pollutants, such as lead, veterinary drugs and illegal poisoning, on the black vulture, developing strategies for their reduction and regulation, and to improve measures to prevent illegal poisoning by promoting the reconciliation between fauna and the livestock sector in western Iberia.
  • To evaluate the impact of the conservation actions carried out in the project on the breeding population of the black vulture.
  • Promote the conservation of the black vulture through exchanges with key sectors to raise awareness in society and encourage greater interest in its conservation.
  • Definition and processing of management agreements with owners.
  • Increased availability of safe nests to encourage the rearing of new pairs.
  • Application of forestry techniques to reduce the risk of fire and thus promote the resilience of the ecosystem to fires.
  • Ensure the availability of food suitable for the black vulture.
  • Dissemination of information on the use of unleaded ammunition and the effect of other pollutants on wildlife to key sectors.
  • Determination of project effectiveness by monitoring the black vulture.
  • Publication of the progress of the project and awareness campaigns aimed at different audiences on the protection and management of ecosystems.
