MITECO

  • The project aims to transform the management of data on the Cantabrian brown bear, listed as “Endangered” in the Catalogue of Threatened Species of Spain, to facilitate its conservation and monitoring.
  • To this end, tools will be developed to digitize and structure historical records on paper, including reports of damage attributed to this species and daily and monthly files on the general condition of the specimens by the Bear of Asturias Foundation.

The general objective is to improve the conservation of the Cantabrian brown bear through the digitization, standardization and accessibility of historical and current data. Thus, data-based decision-making will be optimized, promoting research, efficient management of the species and knowledge transfer, favoring its long-term conservation.

Specific goals include:

  • Improvement of knowledge of the Cantabrian brown bear and its habitat through the digitization and standardization of historical data of interest.
  • Preparation and establishment of an internal data management plan.
  • Design, development and implementation of an open, public and free platform.
  • Training and education of the staff of the Bear of Asturias Foundation for digitalisation.
  • Standardization and digitization of historical material from paper records and reports on the Cantabrian brown bear and its habitat.
  • Standardization, labeling and cataloguing of historical digital material.
  • Implementation of an internal data management plan that includes data improvement.
  • Implementation of an advanced web browser.
  • Training in the digital tools developed within the framework of the project.
